Title: NeXus LAN VII: PC Tournament Vote
Post by: Action on January 29, 2010, 02:15:29 PM
We are interested in trying out new games like Bad Company 2, but please feel free to vote for any games you would like as a tournament.  Even if the game is not picked, I am sure people will still be playing it or running unofficial tourneys.

This sucks, although BC2 has dedicated servers it may be rented online only servers.  We will not know for sure if BC2 will support LAN play until the game comes out... odds are it won't :(

There is always Crysis wars which would be good for a LAN of our size.

Poll has been updated as I added Crysis wars.  If you wanted to vote for that too and have already voted, post a reply.

My three votes were COD4, COD4 freeze tag, and Command and Conquer 4(Other). Left 4 Dead 2 would be awesome too.

I voted for Quake 3. We'll be playing those other games anyways. Q3 is old school skill and everyone's computer can play it without lag.

Cod4 Freeze tag. The random based on skill teams made it play out pretty well last time.  Quake 3 would be great or Quake live. Quake live is internet only but 30ms pings to the Chicago server it doesn't play much different. I would be willing to run an official or unofficial 1v1 tourney of either one. Any cod game would be cool. I have headshots waiting for anyone on the other side. :]

I like the idea of another Q3 Tourney.  It has been awhile since we ran one and if I am not mistaken the original is now public domain so everyone should be able to play it.  Don't need any time of fast system either.

So you argue that we can't have a CS:S tourney because its too old and doesn't attract sponsors but somehow Q3 doesn't?

I think it's because it's hard to get everyone behind CS:S. Q3 will always be fun. I'm not saying CS:S isn't fun. Just not as much as Q3.

If you goto any tourney discussion, CS:S always comes up and the standard response is that hardware sponsors don't like lans with CS:S tourneys. There's even a group of people who don't come to this lan just because CS:S isn't considered for a tourney. So, apparently sponsors are more important than what people want to play. I don't see many people complaining about no Quake tourneys though.

I personally like to see a CS:S gun game tourney, the last big lan I went to had one and was pretty fun.

You know that you could always run a CS-S tournament yourself at the event.   Just cause there are no official ones does not mean that someone can not run and un-offical one themselves.

Ya but I don't have another machine or steam account to run a dedicated.

I will run a CS:S server at the LAN, if you want to host a Tourney on it that will be fine with me.

Cool, if you don't mind running a gun game mod on it, I wouldn't mind running a gun game tourney.

On the tourney I like to set to 2 kills per level, non-deathmatch. Then setup the rounds so only the top half will advanced to the next round till down to 4 and declare the tourney winner from that game. So for example, if there is 11 people on the first round, then on the 2nd round take the top 8, then 3rd round take the top 4, then the winner from that game is the champion. If there is more than 16 people, then add another round for the top 16.

What's the process of running an unofficial tourney?

No COD4 won the vote.  But if you are used to playing COD5 you should not have any problems with COD4.

I liked Demigod when it came out and would have continued to play it if it had more heroes to choose from. The games really seemed repetitve when the same 8 (or 10 now) heroes are on the map every game.
I'd still be down for a game though.

What about an "unofficial" COD5 tournament?

Absolutely, anyone is more than welcome to run unofficial tournaments regardless of game.  We just ask to please not run tournaments during one of the official tournament times.  There is plenty of open free play time so should not be a problem.
