Title: Thoughts on gaming laptop?
Post by: Boon on February 20, 2014, 03:22:03 AM
I was thinking about purchasing a "gaming" laptop for just general around the house use, and pack along for the LANS... A brunt of my gaming will still be done on my main machine, but i want something I can tool around with up in the living room, or away from home.

I dont really want to bust the bank as i simply dont think I would use it enought to constitute spending big bucks.

I was looking at the lenovo y510p Series about the 2 or 3 tier model.... Anyone have any thoughts ot suggestions pertaining to this series or a recommendation on another make in the same price range, I want to keep it under 1000. with 800ish preferable.

If you ok with used I would hit up craigs list.  There are NICE alienware laptops showing up there in the 800-900 range that would be ideal for you.

That would be me X-Infinity-Zero is talking about.  That is the newegg listing from when I bought it.  I have a desktop now, so I really don't have use for it anymore.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a "gaming" laptop, and using it as a steambox/HTPC when its currently residing within my house.

That new MSI gaming laptop is sexy as hell, and would be very tempting once the price comes down on it.

I once had a MSI gaming laptop.. It was super nice.. Then I quit my job ..

It was a great laptop, Super fast.. Ran most of todays games on Ultra settings..

Cons - Heavy as fuckkkkkkk and the power cable was like a brick.. It was heavier then the laptop.

Yea, seriously that laptop owned though.

Newer intel and nvidia chips allowed msi to address pretty much all those issues it seems like. They're as thin as a macbook or razer laptop now, and dont draw anywhere near as much power as they used to

I decided to go with the lenovo y510p

It didnt seem logical to go with any of the other options as I wanted to keep it under 1000 and all the used laptops I saw had lower overall specs and didnt come with a warranty. Plus I get a deal through work.

It comes with

4th gen i7 4700mq
Windows 8.1
15.6" led glossy 1920x1080 display
2(sli) - gt755m gddr5 2gb nvdia cards
8gb ddr3 1600
1tb 5400 rpm hard drive
Dvd recordable
7200 b/g/n wireless card
Bluetooth
1year warranty
And 6cell 72watt hour battery

I got the Cooler Master NotePal X3 from newegg.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834992913

Got it because it really pushes out a lot of air while staying nice and quiet. (Fan Airflow: 65-76.5 CFM)

Its been a hell of a cooler for me.

I thought those lenovo's with the sli had a 2nd video card in lieu of a dvd drive?

Nevertheless they're awesome.

They share the same Bay. ... so you remove one to use the other,  but mine came with both. ...I just choose which I want in the bay.

I don't really use disk any more so I just leave in the second vid card.... and yes it runs great, especially for the price.

The only trouble I have had is with throttling the vid cards in certain games. .. I have to enable vsync and limit the max frames to 60...otherwise they jump to 110-209 fps and it was causing alot unnecessary heat issues... but throttling to vsync gives a constant 60fps and with a cooler never gets hot. It was pumping out some serious heat though till I saw how many fps it was putting out.
