Title: Age Of Conan
Post by: Cyphis on May 05, 2008, 04:28:09 AM
Hey, is anyone out there running in the Beta of Age of Conan.  I can't say I was all that thrilled at first when I heard of it, but looking at their website, there is a lot of nice looking things in the game.

Anyone playing the Beta?  If so, how is it?

I saw that Venus was in it. Haven't heard of anyone else though. Was wanting to check it out and see what it was like. Have heard 50/50 things about it. Some good, some not so good.

I dropped out of the AoC beta only because it became unplayable for me. I was shocked at all the bugs still in the game with only a few weeks to launch. Then I snooped the webs and found a few blogs comparing Open Beta with Closed and found out OB is a much older client and quite buggy. CB is 180 degree difference from OB. I guess FunCom's reason for older client use is to stress test the servers but, man, not a good way to make a first impression with your potential customers. All in all it had a good beat and I could dance to it but then the record kept skippin'.

With how crappy Funcom did Anarchy Online they will have to really do a polished product for me to even consider looking at it.    I was not impressed at all with there last MMO offering.

I was in the stress test, but it being a beta, u can no judge how it will be when it releases. But from what i saw, the first 20 levels are pretty much a storyline/single player missions/quests. After level 20, u leave the starting area, and from what i know, that when the fun starts. The Open beta only goes to level 13, but i received an e-mail that everyone is going to be bumped up to level 20 and put at their races home cities, for all out PvP before the release.

But IMO the game looks very promising! The melee combat is very interesting as it is a new system. But to play this game, i do suggest having a higher end machine.!

What do you mean about the melee system?

The melee system and combat system in AOC is different from wow. More hands-on is required. On Torbold's BLog, he says that you realize you need Macros from all these options, spells, etc.. APparently, you have to click a lot.

Click a lot. Yeah, that was one minor negative. I lost many a battle because I couldn't click fast enough  :D

Venus

P.S.

I will second the notion for needing a high-end machine. Intel dual core, nVidia 8800 GTS 512mb (SLI would be greater) and at least 2 gigs ram for XP, 4 in Vista and you are good to go. Oh, one more thing, the down load client was a heafty 13gigs. Install space needed was 32 gigs and finally settled at 24 gigs HD space after install. Whew!

Well guys I thought I might warn those who are still on the fence about this game, ALOT of the stuff they claim is in the game is not functioning ATM. I'd recommend people check the AOC forums some before actually buying the game, or at least wait a few months for some of the bugs to be ironed out.

This game really should still be a beta...

Sounds like typical Funcom BS just like they crap they pulled with Anarchy Online.

Thanks for the update.   The next MMO I am looking forward to is Warhammer I have that one pre-ordered already.

Well I have been playing here for about 2 weeks. So far here are my thoughts:

1. The Graphics. The graphics in the game rock. They are the most realistic of any game I have seen so far. The landscapes kick ass and the textures look sweet. Character animations are smooth and the details involved are pretty damn cool.

2. Gameplay. Took a bit to get used to. I have played WOW since its inception and it was a bit different layout to get adjusted to. AOC requires more interaction and involvement rather then the click-dead buttons. You actually have to pay attention and keep on your toes. The AI in the game is better then WOW in that if try to attack a single NPC, if there is ANY other NPC within 30-40 ft, they assist your target, unlike WOW.

3. Quests. PRetty much same thing as WOW, but they have something WOW doesnt have, a single-player/destiny mode. You run quests at night without any Multiplayer involvement and no interference or spawn camping/killing to worry about.

4. Gear. I am fairly low level so I can't speak to much on this yet.

5. Classes/Races. The classes overall are different enough to warrant trying them all. However, I was disappointed with the lack of races to choose from. 3, that is it. 3.

Well, back to gaming and let me know if you want any more info.

yeah actually the 3 "races" are all human variations, no monster races are playable ATM.

The biggest problem with this game is the FPS. they need to fix this because even with a high level PC it is hard to keep the frames up when surrounded by other players, or in a city. One of the big claims for this game, the massive PVP battles and seiges, is broken to the point of unplayable for most.

I myself have only been playing long enough to get to level 20 with one char, but from what I'm reading on the forums alot of the advanced content is missing, or lacking in polish/workability. Alot of the promised features are broken/ not finished as well.

There are many imbalances that need to be worked out as far as classes in PVP, money systems, and skills.

None of these things are in themselves gamebreakers, but if you add them all up, and consider them as a whole, you might find the game still a bit off from complete. While this is not new to the gaming industry, releasing a game before it's completion, I would like to warn those who are considering buying this game now of what to expect.

AOC does have great eye candy, and alot of cool promises, but right now the developer is scrambling to make it to that point. I do think the $50 was well spent at this point, but i will find it hard to continue paying $15 a month if they don't make massive improvements...

WoW is completely meant for PvP. I dont see how it's "broken" due to it.

I been playing wow since before arenas and battlegrounds were introduced. The 40 man instances IMO were more fun then the PVP is now. PvE is pretty much broken cause of PvP...

Well I guess they wanted to switch over to completely keep the PvP characters happy, doesnt this happen in all MMO's pretty much.
They all have their downhill point and people switch to the next hottest thing.
