NeXus LAN 11 Minecraft Challenge!

This will be an all weekend challenge. A Minecraft server will be setup for the contestants to build in.

All contestants log into server head out in a random direction away from other contestants and start your build. Please make sure you have enough room away from anyone else so not to interfere with someone else's build.

World will be in creative mode, flat, no creatures, animals or buildings.

Contestants have from Saturday at 1pm to Sunday at 3pm to build what ever they like. A panel of 3 judges will go in Sunday to view everyone's creations and pick a winner of the build off.

I love the idea with a mine craft build challenge, but there is a very bad issue with using a vanilla server.

Vanilla servers are extremely easy to hack; a 7 year old can add the exploits which are untraceable for administrators see.

AntiCheat is a plugin for a Bukkit server that detects exploits for various Flaws/Bugs in Minecraft.

AntiCheat will try to identify illegal data or packets sent by players that may be on your server and exploitation of bugs in the game based on the information or packets the player sends to the server. These cheats could range from going faster than you are supposed to in-game or have a farther reach distance than you are supposed to have. If any of this stuff is detected AntiCheat will stop them and enforce the regular boundaries.

I can configure bukkit server files that you can copy and run on any server that will work just as well as a vanilla server but stop the various exploits. This will ensure the build contest is fair and equal to everyone.

-I set up a basic minecraft server at P3 for you guys that was a vanilla server, but something like this you really need a bukkit server setup.
I have worked with minecraft servers for a while now and am very knowledgeable about them, please take my advice.

Thanks,

Minecraft has 2 different versions that are most popular right now 1.4.7  or  1.5.1.

1.5.1 is the latest mojang build and 1.4.7 is the most stable version.

Both are good and bad which version would you like me to use?

Users will have to find a .jar of 1.4.7 if we use the older version of minecraft so you'll have to keep that in mind.
If anything I could put a 1.4.7 .jar file on your fill server and let users copy it, "NOTE" it is not illegal file sharing to copy the .jar, if it is copied to users that do not have a legal minecraft account they will not be able use it.

I would recomend 1.5.1 because there were over 100 different updates made to it, the most important to me are the day light sensors and LOTS of redstone materials. The biggest flaw is that if you hang a painting anywhere in the map, the painting will not show up.

Minecraft 1.5.2 is out and from what I notice it will not connect to 1.5.1 servers.  I had to update my bukkit server to 1.5.2 before 1.5.2 clients could connect.

Ahh, I only saw a prerelease for 1.5.2, did they fully release it for public download?

If that’s the case the a 1.5.2 bukkit server would be the best option.

I really would prefer to set up the sever to meet a few specs to prevent users from Cheating and griefing

I can add a plugin that stops people from destroying other users creations and protects there inventions.

I can also Add a chat filter if you would like.

The one I am running is not a release version but I had no choice since everyone updated to 1.5.2.  But it works just fine and has not crashed yet or anything like that.  I will check every day or so and download the new jars as they release them though. largest problem I am having is finding 1.5.2 server plugins.  Those are taking awhile to get upgraded so you may find that a problem. All the 1.5.2 plugins I have found and use are still development releases as well.

So. If the server plugins are not updated with in the next 2 weeks I can set up a 1.5.1 server as a backup.

I would really recommend a few essential plugin’s to prevent grieving, hacking, and support an overall better player environment.

Vanilla servers are in all reality only good for you an a single friend that you trust to play on.

There was a Minecraft competition at the last LAN i was at, and i believe they used the standard release on a server with the fun mode enabled giving everyone all the stuff to build with. If anyone was caught destroying anyone else's stuff, they were to be nicely escorted out of the LAN. I think if you could just monitor who is in the server at all times, people won't mess with anyone else's buildings and if they do, just make the penality high enough to deter people from logging in just to grief.

True, but people can cheat and administrators would have no clue that they are.
Cheats can be used undected in a vanilla server.

If you have the balls to cheat in a game at a LAN then you deserve to get punched in the face.

I still watch that video that went viral of a guy caught cheating at i think Counter Strike. It's a very CRUDE video of a bunch of guys standing around someone playing at a LAN. Someone yells something, and they all start yelling, CHEATER. Someone grabs his case and someone else grabs the CRT monitor and they walk outside and THROW IT ON THE GROUND! smashing the old yellow'd case and the pieces go all over the parking lot.
They took that stuff seriously!
I think it's this one, i can't watch it as i'm typing this from work...

With the bukkit server I'm config we can see and track players that are cheating. If someone is caught we can remove them like adults Wink

Its a safety precaution that is simple to set up and helps promote an equal environment.

I am fine with it as long as it supports 1.5.2     We have never had any cheating issues in all our events so I dont see it being an issue here but being on the side of caution works for me.
