We've set up a channel on irc.quakenet.org.  Simply connect your client and join #NexusLAN.

What is IRC?
IRC is a client-server based real time chat application.  Think of like an in game chat - with moderators - that you can be connected to 24/7.

IRC Clients
MIRC: http://www.mirc.com/get.php?version=732 (Locks after 90 days and no registration)
Hydra-IRC: http://www.hydrairc.com/content/downloads
X-Chat: http://xchat.org/windows/
Or the thousands of others..

Two commands you need to know.
/server irc.quakenet.org
/join #nexuslan

FAQ

Why not Gamesurge?
QuakeNet is a larger network and supports their network better than gamesurge.  Frankly, gamesurge was the first choice but the inability to register a channel and one word answers from their support staff forced me to look else-where.  Frankly, QuakeNet appears to be a more professionally ran IRC server.

We have forums/teamspeak/ventrillo/gtalk for communications
IRC is different.  One person can effectively address many people at one time and it can be both real-time, and delayed in that you can always scroll up or respond to a question later.

Worth mentioning: They have some great community channels.  Their #LeagueOfLegends channel had 500 people in it when I checked!  Their #WoW channel had 40 people, #DayZ had 90, etc.  There's already a massive world-wide community that dwarfs Gamesurge.  So make sure you check out the other channels too.

Can I have ops/voice/whatever
Please don't ask.

Can I idle?
Please do.

Can I run a fileserver?
Do not use #NexusLAN to advertise or facilitate any type of illicit activities.

Can I run a bot?
As long as it's not annoying and any associated commands do not start with '.' or otherwise interfere with "Q" or "PipBoy2000", the channels bots.

Do I need to attend a NexusLAN event to join the channel?
Feel free to join or invite anyone you think might fit the channel.  We're not limited to attendees only.

General rules:
Feel free to chat about LANs, gaming, hardware, or general life.
Use common sense.
If you use any kind of IRC scripts, please keep them reasonable.  IE: Spamming a channel with an MP3 script can get annoying pretty quickly.
Use common sense.
Don't take things personally.  It's easy to take things out of context.
And use common sense.

I kind of expect it to be fairly dead up until LAN time, after the LAN I'm banking several people stick around.  To me, it really is the easiest way to communicate with friends and common-minded folk.  So if anyone can idle, feel free.

I will either link to a web version or host one myself for the LAN, but I want to kind of deter web clients for the time being.  That said, http://www.quakenet.org hosts one.
