How 2 Play RTSs - Help

Anyone have suggestions or can you point me to resources like websites or books about the fundamentals for playing RTS games? I played Homeworld when first released and now with the reboot, which I'm trying to play, I still can't figure these things out. Collect resources, build this, research that. Not enough time to do it all before I get slaughtered, and that's against the computer playing the campaign. Go up against another player and it's over before it has begun.

The best thing when trying to learn rts games is go to youtube and search *Game name* builds. I was late to the game when I started playing Starcraft 2, however I watched straight forward builds on youtube and the came came much quicker to me.
