4  Past LAN Archive / NeXus LAN 21 - Tournament Discussion / State of CS:GO Random Teams on: April 13, 2018, 08:06:26 AM
I felt this was important to state as Steams new privacy policy that went in to affect on April 11th greatly affects how we build teams, specifically for CS:GO.

When I stepped in to oversee tournaments.. 5 years ago?  Our tournaments were fairly disorganized.  They ran OK, but the way we sorted teams was flat-out terrible.  They were true randoms.  True randoms, as it was, isn't a good choice for a competitive environment where you may end up playing with 4 or 5 other people you don't know when there are sometimes pretty serious prizes on the line.  Serious prizes deserves a serious method of sorting teams.  That has always been my logic.  We also still want to encourage participation in tournaments by everyone, regardless of skill level.

Over the years, we've been working to be able to control what we're able to control to keep teams fair.  I'm sure many of you remember being called up as we would take rankings and battle.net ID's.  Last fall we implemented a system that allows me to ask you for information that I can dump in to a spreadsheet and not have to call anyone up (assuming it's accurate).

In a game like CS:GO, what we've started to do was pretty elaborate in terms of team setup.  I spent 3 hours on CS:GO team setup last event, and that was with most of my processes automated.  Effectively, every single player was assigned a "score" based on several variables that included everything from rank, hours played, K:D ratio, accuracy, and several other factors.  I also tagged players that tended to be AWPers for example, to ensure no one team wound up with two epic snipers.  It's not a perfect system, but it's a much better system than we've had.

On April 11th, all of that went out the window.  Unless your profile is public on Steam, I cannot use either statistic websites (I'm still trying to find one that may have cached, since it's a recent change) that pull stats or use the Steam API to pull statistical information.

While we're pretty sure that high ranking players are going to be pretty good,  it's the ones that don't play competitively, mislead us by providing false information, or might not play CS:GO much that will be incredibly muddy.  We're going to do our best to try to be fair, but admittedly, it was just made much more difficult.

It's unreasonable for us to ask our event participants to set their Steam accounts to be public, but I do ask that everyone is truthful when it comes to filling out the information during registration, including skill level and competitive rankings achieved.   It'll help continue to create a fair and level playing field.

As stated, we'll do the best we can, and we'll continue to evolve our processes and brainstorm to try to find a solution to continue to try to make teams as fair as they can be.

Our other tournaments will not be impacted by the Steam privacy policy.

Thanks!

Some special rules added

I'll determine the best method for assigning teams for the squad.  There's several variables in play.

I'm considering giving BYOT + random pool a shot for this event.  IE: You can bring your own (LAN ONLY - NO RINGERS), or we'll assign you one.  There are several variables under consideration though.
6  Past LAN Archive / NeXus LAN 21 - Tournament Discussion / TL;DR Tournament Guidelines on: February 28, 2018, 04:48:06 AM
TL;DR Tournament Guidelines

Work in progress.  If you've been around a while, you know what to expect.  If you're new, please review.

The Black

  • Only sign up for tournaments if you plan on playing in them and sticking it out.
  • Patch your games and ensure they run and have proper settings prior to the LAN.
  • Sign up for tournaments as early as you can, it makes our job much easier.
  • We are an inclusive environment.  Toxic behavior is not acceptable.
  • No, we're not going to (intentionally) put you on a team with your friend.
  • Yes staff can play in tournaments, no there's no favoritism.  We have guidelines, and no we won't tell you what they are.
  • If you have network issues, it's probably not us, but let us know.  Before the tournament.
  • If we have internet issues, it sucks, but it happens.  It's probably not us.  We're probably already aware.
  • Be honest and accurate when filling out the tournament questionnaire during signup, not doing so wastes time.

The White

  • Use discord team channels.
  • If you have to leave or need to pull from a tournament prior to the start, let us know.
  • Meet with your team prior, add them on steam if required.
  • Be the person that steps up and gets your team organized.
  • If you hear us calling for your friend, please let that person know.
  • If you're not sure about something, please ask staff.

The Gray

Understand it's our intention to ensure that participants enjoy tournaments.  We're also aware there are some sweet prizes on the line. Stuff happens.  We'll deal with the situation as best as we can that's as fair as we can make it and creates a competitive environment.  Both sides have opinions and we'll hear them both before any decision is made.  We want to be fair to both the players and our sponsors.  One side probably won't like our decision, but that's fine.

Sometimes we start tournaments late.  There are many reasons why.  Most of the time it's because people leave, sign up late, or are not prepared.  Please don't be that person.  If you need to go somewhere for a few minutes during a tournament, let a friend or team-mate know so we're not begging for you to grace us with your presence.  Our goal is to post teams on the forum 15 minutes after lockdown.  We rarely hit this goal as we end up trying to hunt a few people down for another team.  If you're left out of the tournament but signed up for it, it's because you signed up late and we couldn't find enough for another team.  Sorry.  Sign up earlier.

Don't like your team?  Sorry, but it'll probably happen again if that's your feeling.  There's a method to our madness, and 99.9% of the people are pretty cool about it.

Just FYI since I expect to see a ton of PUBG

If it's feasible, we're gonna do it.  Still vote for it, just sayin'.  Still bring it up too, if we can get an open dialogue with the devs, we'd point them to this thread.

PubG would be friggin awesome

Trash talking is kind of a new thing

I mean, here and there.  But I haven't heard of it on this level yet.

Definitely something we'll announce when we call tournaments.  We are in a somewhat unique environment due to the Alcohol, but it's not really an excuse.
9  Past LAN Archive / NeXus LAN 20 - General Discussion / Re: NeXus LAN 20 Post Event Attendee Discussion - Give us your feedback!!!! on: October 19, 2017, 05:58:06 PM
Glocky, was it your team amongst themselves or other team?

We had an issue where someone was trash talking.. and one of the team members was right next to the guy and could hear him.  That was handled, definitely not something we put up with.  Especially when we have minors playing in the tourneys, it's also against one of the core values of the LAN.

That crap doesn't belong at our events.
