Check your pm from earlier.
Dotastrategy.com is a great database of the different heroes in the game and the various items.
This site also offers build strategies (what to buy) for each of the heroes.
You will need getdota.com for the current map (as you will be booted from most games for attempting to download in game.)
The map is updated from every few weeks to every few months depending on the current development changes or bugs found.
Just post here if there are any questions and one of us will get you squared away!

Do you have The frozen throne installed?
Once that is done goto http://www.getdota.com/ai and get the map with computer support.
In the past the computers have been well above the average player on easy mode.
The needed commands at the very start of the game go...
-apem      This enables you to pick any hero from both sides
-arem       This enables a random hero given to everyone
Those two are enough for now (the em is for easy mode)
-sdem       This enables you a choice of three heroes that you can pick in your circle of power.

That is enough to get you started, let us know how it goes!

Www.garena.com it's like hamachi but has game rooms that simulate all of you being at a LAN.

I've seen many rooms just for USA and full rooms throughout the day (max225 in a room).
At any given time just in the US 600-1200 people during the day in DotA rooms.

Well you get that anywhere in anygame anyways lol.
If you are a newbie to DotA, I know Bnet players give you little slack if you don't have a clue or die a lot.
That leads to a ton of comments to leave etc. or just a plain old boot out of the game.
But once you get a basic understanding and don't die it is not bad.
