To clarify on that #2, that is no players may stand around and watch other players play until the finals.  I don't have a problem necessarily with eliminated players watching which is why I'm asking for feedback.  I just don't want those familliar with the game and nothing left to gain reporting how someone plays to a competitor.
64  Past LAN Archive / NeXus LAN 13 - Tournaments / Hearthstone rule feedback on: March 22, 2014, 09:43:14 AM
Looking for feedback from those who have played hearthstone and plan to be participating at the LAN.

Since this game is a prize based tournament and is a little unique as it requires logic and planning skill as opposed to twitch skill, part of the rules discussion about this game will be how to keep a player from having an advantage over another player.  We also have to consider that individuals are already spending money to build competitive decks for this tournament.  If you don't play Hearthstone don't let my last statement deter you, you can still compete by getting a character to level 10 (easy, even if all you do is lose).  Strategy and luck outweighs most cards.

Cheating rules (Asked to leave the event)
1) No remote desktop assistance of any sort (IE: having someone play for your remotely, or watching your screen and advising you as to what to do)
2) You must play your account and your account only, no account sharing.

Advantage Rules (Up to DQ from tourney)
1) No arm chair quarterbacking (standing around telling someone what to do).  This is a twitch game vs logic game rule.
2) No players in the tournament may watch other players play, including if you've already been eliminated.
3) No rebuilding of decks between your games against your opponent.  Have plenty of decks ready if you want options between games.  It'll be after midnight, no one wants to sit around and wait.  If you want to build a deck after you play an opponent and move on in the tournament, that's fine.  Do it quickly.  We won't wait to start the next round very long.

#2 is the big questionable one.

It can be fun to watch, but what we dont want happening is someones play style being revealed to a possible competitor, especially by having a possible competitor actually watching at your PC.  It can be fairly pricy to build one deck exactly the way you want it to be, but on the other side, tourneys can be fun to watch.  Thus non-competitors can watch as long as they're not arm chair quarterbacking.  Please use discretion and don't reveal strategy to other players.

Because it's a different type of game, I feel there should be specific rules.  It's one thing to stand around watching someone play an FPS or Worms, etc and commenting on them.  There's a huge skill/twitch factor with those games.  Hearthstone is a little different.

I don't want us to lock it down and not make it fun, but I also want to ensure the tournament is ran fairly.

Hearthstone will be fun

It lended itself really well to LAN play when we tested it.. I said I'd run it as an after raffle/midnight thing for the hell of it, but I think it might be the game everyone is most looking forward to.

To clarify they made all of these awesome footage vids

And they were not gameplay.  All pre-rendered.  Lots of anger about that one.

Based on what we were told it requires everyone to be a high level to be competitive and play against each other and based on research, we found there was no way to even things out.  If we're wrong and you can provide a link that states otherwise definitely let us know.

72  Past LAN Archive / NeXus LAN 12 - General Chat / NexusLAN IRC Channel #NexusLAN irc.quakenet.org on: October 11, 2013, 11:43:17 PM
irc.quakenet.org #NexusLAN

During the post NexusLAN 11 discussion we wanted to make communication a little more fluid, so we created an IRC channel.  You are encouraged to join the IRC channel during the event, but feel free to hang out before and after as well.  Doesn't have to be LAN oriented.

irc.Quakenet.org in general has some pretty good gaming channels.

For more details see this post:

I kind of expect it to be fairly dead up until LAN time, after the LAN I'm banking several people stick around.  To me, it really is the easiest way to communicate with friends and common-minded folk.  So if anyone can idle, feel free.

I will either link to a web version or host one myself for the LAN, but I want to kind of deter web clients for the time being.  That said, http://www.quakenet.org hosts one.
74  NeXus LAN - General Discussion Forums / News & Announcements / Official NexusLAN IRC Channel (Real-Time Chat) irc.quakenet.org #NexusLAN on: October 11, 2013, 11:37:28 PM
We've set up a channel on irc.quakenet.org.  Simply connect your client and join #NexusLAN.

What is IRC?
IRC is a client-server based real time chat application.  Think of like an in game chat - with moderators - that you can be connected to 24/7.

IRC Clients
MIRC: http://www.mirc.com/get.php?version=732 (Locks after 90 days and no registration)
Hydra-IRC: http://www.hydrairc.com/content/downloads
X-Chat: http://xchat.org/windows/
Or the thousands of others..

Two commands you need to know.
/server irc.quakenet.org
/join #nexuslan

FAQ

Why not Gamesurge?
QuakeNet is a larger network and supports their network better than gamesurge.  Frankly, gamesurge was the first choice but the inability to register a channel and one word answers from their support staff forced me to look else-where.  Frankly, QuakeNet appears to be a more professionally ran IRC server.

We have forums/teamspeak/ventrillo/gtalk for communications
IRC is different.  One person can effectively address many people at one time and it can be both real-time, and delayed in that you can always scroll up or respond to a question later.

Worth mentioning: They have some great community channels.  Their #LeagueOfLegends channel had 500 people in it when I checked!  Their #WoW channel had 40 people, #DayZ had 90, etc.  There's already a massive world-wide community that dwarfs Gamesurge.  So make sure you check out the other channels too.

Can I have ops/voice/whatever
Please don't ask.

Can I idle?
Please do.

Can I run a fileserver?
Do not use #NexusLAN to advertise or facilitate any type of illicit activities.

Can I run a bot?
As long as it's not annoying and any associated commands do not start with '.' or otherwise interfere with "Q" or "PipBoy2000", the channels bots.

Do I need to attend a NexusLAN event to join the channel?
Feel free to join or invite anyone you think might fit the channel.  We're not limited to attendees only.

General rules:
Feel free to chat about LANs, gaming, hardware, or general life.
Use common sense.
If you use any kind of IRC scripts, please keep them reasonable.  IE: Spamming a channel with an MP3 script can get annoying pretty quickly.
Use common sense.
Don't take things personally.  It's easy to take things out of context.
And use common sense.
